Dust complaint received by AEPA on September 29, 2025.Claystone was informed of this complaint later this same day.
Complaint: Odor and dust EDGE Description: Claystone waste facility is dusting caller out. They are not putting water down to control dust on roads from trucks entering the facility. They operate terribly until an inspector tells them they’ve received a complaint. Caller will wash car and within 30 seconds of being home it is disgusting and like it was never washed. Site is just behind callers home. Caller doesn’t think they should be breathing this stuff let alone smelling it. Odor is also present and it never goes away. 10/10 for severity.
Claystone findings:
- All Claystone operations were within normal parameters on Saturday September 27 and no excessive dust was created or noted by operators.
- The entire facility was closed (as it is every Sunday) from 6pm September 27 through 4am September 29.
- Ryley Lagoon has been a persistent source of odour since August 18 and was in an extremely odorous state when observed by Claystone personnel, CAO Ryley, and Ryley Public Works Manager on September 29 on site.
- Confirmed on-site dust control activities.
- All trucks entering and exiting the Claystone facility take Hwy 854, a paved asphalt surface which does not generate significant dust. Trucks do not exit the facility using any gravel surface county roads.
- County gravel roads including Township 502 have been very dusty due to lack of rainfall, but traffic entering Claystone does not use these unpaved roads.
- Two nearby activities were noted as dust-generating within the vicinity:
- Ongoing capping of the adjacent Clean Harbors Class I landfill.
- Harvesting of wheat grown on Claystone lands in support of the Ryley ‘fuel the pool’ campaign.
Claystone is unable to conclusively determine the source or severity of the reported dust but is confident it did not originate within the Claystone facility itself or from any other Claystone-controlled areas. The only significant source of malodour noted during the complaint timeframe was from a non-Claystone source. View the full report
