Odour assessment following compost facility operations.

Compost odour detected within composting facility (screening area and compost pad). Freshly-screened product releasing woody/musty odour, slight aldehyde content.

Noted strong MSW/landfill in the screening area coming off the working face at the SW portion of the landfill with a distinct trace of hydrocarbons from hydrovac slurry.

Operations crew processing last of day’s material including moving active material and a small amount of cure. Odour release consistent with active handling and not rotten or putrid – earthy, sweet, banana-like odour. Odour should dissipate once material settles overnight.

Investigator noted a light odour of compost at the side entry gate but significant MSW/landfill plume in close proximity.  

No compost odours detected off site, some MSW/landfill between Checkpoints 2 and 3. Lagoon odour detected at Checkpoint 2.
