When you think of a tight-knit community, the image that might come to mind is – well – knitting! In the Hamlet of Bruce, however, it would seem that quilting is what binds the community together.
The Bruce Quilters is a group of 10-12 women who meet up at the Immanual Lutheran Church on Mondays throughout the winter months. Together, they make quilts that will be donated to organizations that help people in need, including FCSS (Family and Community Support Services), Good Samaritan, Open Door, women’s shelters, and more. Last year alone, they made and donated approximately 100 quilts, and this year’s tally will end up being close to 70 quilts.
The process is deceptively simple. The quilt tops are sewn together by a couple of the ladies using new fabric donated to the group. The quilt tops are then backed with donated bed sheets and stuffed with batting before being tied with wool.
In their grant application, they noted their biggest expense is quilt batting and thread. Claystone Waste was pleased to offer $800 as part of the Community Grant Program to help purchase batting for the quilts.
As a token of appreciation, Elaine Lang of the Bruce Quilters presented Claystone with one of their handmade quilts. We are extremely honoured to receive this amazing gift and will be proudly displaying it in our main administration office.
Thank you to the amazing people who are part of the Bruce Quilters for supporting the community and the region through a worthwhile activity that helps so many people.
