Grow a Giant, Grow Community: Claystone Waste’s Pumpkin Contest Returns!

Ready to dig in and grow something spectacular this summer? Claystone Waste is thrilled to announce the return of our annual Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest! This community initiative invites residents of Tofield, Viking, Ryley, Holden, and Beaver County to discover the power of compost and compete for bragging rights and cash prizes.

Why Compost Matters

At its core, this contest showcases Claystone Waste’s commitment to our communities and the incredible benefits of our lab-tested, category A compost. Our compost helps improve soil texture, enhances nutrient availability, and encouraging robust plant growth. It helps sandy soil retain moisture and allows heavy clay soil to drain efficiently. While not a fertilizer replacement, its rich organic matter supports the growth of beneficial microorganisms, turning your soil into a thriving ecosystem.

How the Contest Works

Getting started on your giant pumpkin journey is straightforward. Participants receive a ticket for an Atlantic Giant pumpkin plant from Maple Park Farm (pick-up starts May 18). We recommend mixing Claystone Compost with your soil (1 part compost to 4 parts soil) when planting. Remember to harden off your plant over seven days for the best start; detailed instructions are on the Vesey website.

It is important to note that the competition measures the LARGEST pumpkin by length and circumference – not weight! Submit your measurements and photos by September 5, 2026. Our judges will review submissions, and the top three winners will be announced on Monday, September 14, 2026. Prizes are $300 for first place, $200 for second, and $100 for third!

To ensure a fair contest, here are the key rules:

  • You must reside and grow your pumpkin within Tofield, Viking, Ryley, Holden, or Beaver County.
  • Only Claystone compost is allowed for soil preparation – no chemical fertilizers.
  • Use only the Atlantic Giant plants provided by Maple Park Farm.
  • Submit monthly progress photos to comms@claystonewaste.com.
  • Register your entry by May 30, 2026. Limited to 100 registrants!

How to Plant Your Pumpkin for Success

To give your pumpkin the best possible start, mix your compost with soil at a ratio of 1 part compost to 4 parts soil. Place this mixture in the planting hole and around the surrounding area.

Before planting outdoors, your pumpkin plant will also need time to adjust, so follow this 7-day guide:

  • Day 1: 2–3 hours outside, warm and slightly shaded, protected from wind
  • Day 2: 3 hours in partial to full sun with a light breeze
  • Day 3: 4 hours in full sun
  • Day 4: 5–6 hours in full sun
  • Day 5: Full day in the sun
  • Day 6: Full day and overnight (if temperatures stay well above freezing)
  • Day 7: Ready to be planted!

Growing Pumpkins and Community

This contest is more than just growing a big pumpkin; it’s about connecting our communities. Claystone’s roots run deep in Beaver County. We are run by your neighbours and deeply invested in the region’s future. Every year, we deliver millions of dollars into our communities, funding vital services, infrastructure, and other local needs. Over the last three years alone, we’ve invested more than $10 million, directly supporting residents and towns. Programs like our Good Neighbour Grant and Community Grant Program fund local organizations and events. This pumpkin contest is another way we foster community spirit and provide engaging local opportunities as an integral partner, working alongside you for the betterment of our shared home.

So, gather your gardening tools, register your interest before May 30, 2026, and get ready to grow a champion! We can’t wait to see your giant pumpkins and celebrate our vibrant community together. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and share your progress photos!
