Three things to keep in mind when growing a giant pumpkin

At Claystone, we’re proud to bring our community together through activities that connect families, encourage outdoor learning, and keep kids engaged throughout the summer break. Our Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest is a fun way for gardeners of all ages and experience levels to get their hands dirty, learn about growing healthy produce, and enjoy some friendly competition along the way. Whether you’re hoping to grow a prize-winning pumpkin or simply looking for a rewarding summer project with the family, success starts with creating the right conditions for your pumpkin to thrive.

Growing a giant pumpkin takes patience, planning, and the right growing conditions. Here are three important things to keep in mind as you work toward a prize-winning pumpkin.

1. Start with Healthy, Nutrient-Rich Soil

The foundation of any successful garden is healthy soil. Giant pumpkins require significant amounts of nutrients throughout the growing season, making soil quality one of the most important factors in their development.

Adding compost to your garden helps improve soil structure, supports beneficial microorganisms, and provides a steady source of organic matter. Compost also improves moisture retention, helping plants access the water and nutrients they need to grow.

Before planting, consider picking up compost from Claystone and incorporating it into your garden beds to create an environment where pumpkin roots can thrive.

2. Consistent Watering is Key

Pumpkins grow rapidly, especially during the summer months when fruit development accelerates. Inconsistent watering can stress the plant and limit growth potential.

Aim to provide deep, regular watering rather than frequent shallow watering. This encourages stronger root systems and helps maintain consistent soil moisture levels. Mulching around your plants can also help reduce evaporation and keep soil temperatures stable.

When paired with soil enriched by our compost, proper watering practices help ensure your pumpkin has access to the resources it needs throughout the season.

3. Feed the Plant, Not Just the Pumpkin

While it’s exciting to watch a pumpkin grow, the fruit can only become as large as the plant supporting it. Healthy vines and leaves act as the engine that powers pumpkin growth.

Gardeners should focus on maintaining overall plant health through proper spacing, weed management, and soil nutrition. Compost plays an important role by supporting long-term soil fertility and helping plants develop the strong root systems needed to sustain large fruit.

A healthy, vigorous plant is far more likely to produce a pumpkin that stands out at harvest time.

Ready to Grow?

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or trying your hand at giant pumpkins for the first time, the right foundation can make all the difference. By focusing on soil health, consistent watering, and overall plant vitality, you’ll be well on your way to growing your biggest pumpkin yet.

With a little patience, plenty of care, and the help of Claystone’s compost, your pumpkin could be the one turning heads at weigh-in day.

We can’t wait to see what our community grows this season! Winners of the contest will be announced on October 5.
