When Claystone launched its 2026 Giant Pumpkin Contest, we knew to expect some impressive pumpkins. What we didn’t know was the story that would grow alongside them.
This year’s winner, Kathleen Anderson of Ryley, has been gardening for as long as she can remember. Inspired by her grandmother and aunt, both avid gardeners, Kathleen describes gardening as one of her favourite ways to relax and recharge. Even in the winter months, her home is filled with plants and transplants from the previous growing season.
Ironically, Kathleen and her husband Terry had planned to take things a little easier this year. Instead of planting a traditional vegetable garden, they converted much of the space into a perennial flower garden. But when Kathleen spotted a Facebook post about Claystone’s Giant Pumpkin Contest and the free Atlantic Giant pumpkin seedlings available through the program, she decided to give it a try.
The real secret, according to Kathleen, was Claystone’s Category A compost. After picking up compost from Claystone and mixing it into the soil, the couple planted their seedling and followed the growing instructions provided by the seed supplier. Thanks to plenty of compost, lots of care, and a summer that brought more rainfall than usual, the pumpkin plant quickly spread across a large section of their backyard.
Before long, small pumpkins began to appear and kept growing week after week.
“I haven’t had much success growing pumpkins in the past, so I didn’t expect this one to turn out the way it did,” Kathleen said. “But with Claystone’s compost, lots of rain, and a little patience, it just kept growing. I’m delighted to have won and can’t wait to turn it into pumpkin pie!”
Congratulations, Kathleen, and thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Giant Pumpkin Contest. We can’t wait to see what grows next year! 🍂🎃
